Student involvement ideas

Our school has a service hours policy. Our middle school students have to work 2 1/2 hours a quarter doing volunteer work. They have a form for the person they are volunteering for fill out and sign. I know public schools do not require their students to earn service hours. Do you have a student council? When your school has events do you leave a sign up sheet in the middle school class rooms for the students to sign up? Our Parent Group is going to visit the classrooms and talk to the students about the event and ask them to sign up to help. We have found the kids really do like helping out at the Santa Breakfast, the Book Fairs, and Fall Masquerade. We recognize the students that help in our newsletters and in our community papers when we recap or events. I hope this is some help to you. Good Luck!

Our third through fifth grade student council members last year collected and donated over $2000 to Habitat For Humanity. Of course, this was student council, but it's still a thought!

Oh, by the way, just to brag...my son was Student Council President!

We do canned food drives for both Thanksgiving and Christmas. We try to turn it into a big thing and if the school makes its goal, they all get popcorn parties and get to choose when--either the last day before christmas break or the last day before winter break.

I am looking for ways for students to be involved in "community" type events. Example: Collecting goodie bags for soldiers and bears for the sheriff's department. What other "think about someone besides yourself" ideas do you all have?
