What size piece of wood are you using?

My husband is making a flipping game for the carnival. Its made out of wood and looks like a teeter totter type thing. On one end you put the frog on the other the kids hit it and try to get it into the bucket whatever.

My question does anyone know what we could use so that the wood doesn't split after its had quite a few wacks to it. Something to take the blow per se. I was thinking maybe a piece of linoleum, but thought some you may have a better idea or might have done this before.
