Multicultural Night

Our school does an event like this - we call it our Heritage Festival. We have such a diverse school population (I think the last survey showed we had over 65 langs, other than english, spoken in students homes!) that we tap into the parents to man the tables. Each table has it ethnic theme with poster/pictures, music, items from that country, of course authentic food (made be the parent) and most of the time the parents dress in their countries outfits. We also hold a talent showcase for any child that would like to show off their heritages talent - be it a dance, song or playing an instrument.

This is one of our biggest events of the year and enjoyed so much!

We do a multi-cultural craft night in early December. We have crafts from Mexico, South America, Europe, Africa, India and Asia. We have the crafts set up at different tables, with descriptions of the crafts, maps and items of interest about the specific country. We also have music and dancing.

Our school hosts an International Night each year in January (around the Chinese New Year) and also a good time to get together for some family fun and relaxation after the holiday rush. Each family brings a homemade dish from their ethnic heritage and we set up a buffet so everyone gets to try the different ethnic foods. We also have some families volunteer to do entertainment around their heritage. We have had Korean dancers, explanation of Indian customs with those families wearing full Indian dress, Irish dancers, etc. It is always a fun night and the kids really enjoy sampling the different foods. Some years, we have created a recipe book to be given out that night including all of the recipes from the dishes that each familiy brought. Renee - New Horizons Montessori School in PA
