Personally, I love ice cream. But couldn't they drink MILK for calcium? & also have a snack that will tide their little bellies over more than ice cream!! Poor teacher, too! A room full of 5yr. olds hopped up on ice cream!

We are still going to serve pop and a cookie at our Family Fun Night events. As others have said, we still have a pop machine in the teacher work room and we still serve questionable items for breakfast and lunch to our students. Ice cream, no bake cookies, honey buns! Twice a month, for breakfast, the menu includes cereal and honey buns. Go figure...

For the most part, I make sure my kids eat healthy at home. I minimize processed foods, buy whole grains, organic produce, 100% juice...But they DO get to have treats. I agree that a lot of schools/districts have gone overboard & I definetly agree that school lunches are awful! It is quite hypocritical for school to restrict the food that is brought from home & serve things like hot dogs & french fries for hot lunch. I would think that there would be room for interpretation in these wellness programs. How can they tell you what you are allowed to feed your own kid?

Pam- Seriously, Frito Pie?! You've GOT to be kidding me!

I'm just piping in here. Our schools have a very strict "no junk food" policy. 2 times a year we are allowed to bring restricted foods for class parties.. that's it. They even yell at the kids if the snack their parents packed for them is not within the guidelines.. however.. the cafeteria serves "Frito Pie" and snickerdoodles for lunch at least 4 times a month! We also have juice machines in the gym.. which are better than soda, but juice sugar is just as bad as soda sugar. I agree they should practice what they preach and not just take away the "fun" food.
