Movie night with subtitles

If your hispanic students are not being taught english in the schools and can go through speaking only spanish, then it would work. However, if your school is teaching the hispanic students to speak english and all curriculum is in english, then this would help them. I understand your dilemma, but I personnally think it would benefit the students more to experience it in english. (I don't see any mexican families in my movie theatre with an aid to understand the movie--its only viewed in english)

Looking forward to next year, another parent & I would like to work on community-building in our largely hispanic school. We want to get all of the families (hispanic and non-hispanic) doing things together & getting to know each other better. One of our biggest stumbling blocks, I think, is a language barrier.

One thing we're thinking about doing is a movie night, with a very minimal fee (or maybe none at all, with concessions paying the movie licensing fee). We could show the movie in two different places (gym & library?) - one in english & one in spanish, but that wouldn't achieve the goal of community. So, I'm thinking we could show the movie in english, but with spanish subtitles.

Has anyone tried anything like this? How has it worked out?
