Talent Show

We just had our first ever talent show Friday night and it was a huge success. I had the music teacher, my treasurer, and I preview all the acts to ensure they were appropriate. All songs also had to be 3:00 minutes or less to ensure we didn't drag the night out. We sent out flyers informing the students and parents of all rules. Then the week of the talent show, we had a dress rehearsal, to make sure no costumes were in bad taste, and then had our show. For our first run, it wasn't too bad. We only had one technical issues. One of our groups should of had mics on, but had helped out with another act and didn't get on mics before their performance. We had them come back out later in the show for on an encore. We had programs made up with all the performers. During dress rehearsals, we annotated on a sheet who would need mics and whether they needed to be muted or not. The kids had a great time and so did the parents. We had over 260 people in attendance and for our school that is a huge success! We only have 400 kids in our elementary/junior high. We had 31 acts in all and the event lasted 2 hours. My daughter had been in a talent show at her previous school, so I just took from what they had done and went with it. I also found by searching on this site some helpful information from other talent shows. Believe me the more help you have the better it will be. But I wouldn't have gotten the applause I did at the end of the show - if it hadn't been from everyone here - I love these message boards, and I continue to say if I didn't have these boards I would be at a loss most of the time. THANKS TO ALL here without you our show wouldn't have been a success. Also, the whole week before the talent show my youngest daughter was sick so I really leaned on my treasurer, a teacher at school, for a lot of help. My youngest didn't get to participate but my oldest told her all about it. Hopefully next year they'll both attend and have a blast.

My school didn't do it, but others have.
They also had to approve the acts due to the songs or costumes being inappropriate. They eventually went to a no lip sync program since so many kids were just doing that and there wasn't much "talent" being displayed. They had a much better program when they stopped the lip syncing.
Acts were limited to the number within a group due to the space they needed on the stage.
Local TV station was asked to attend & they appear on the local TV channel for a month. That not only got more kids to come out for the show, but parents encouraged their kids as well. They made good money at the door.

They asked the HS band to attend. Not sure if they played music leading up to the show and then at intermission or if they also accompanied some of the students that didn't have music for their act. But the 5th grade band members were asked to also play with the HS students so that brought out more parents to watch the show!

Doing it for my one and only ~~ my son!

The teachers organize ours. Every child who enters participates. They try to not have duplicate songs being sung and have at least 3 after school practices. We have it on Wed afternoon for the students and Thurs night for the parents.
Props we needed:
tumbling mats
table for magic acts
piano
And the PTO board participated too - I do have to say we had lots of fun. We haven't come up with something to do this year yet

Has anyone organized a talent show/night for their school. We are a Pre-K through 5th grade (about 670 kids) and would like to have a talent show. Problem is - our school never had one, I have never been to one - and I have no clue as to organize one. Any help would be appreciated.
