Family Math Night

Hi everyone - our school just had it's very first "Family Math Night". Everyone seemed to have a lot of fun. The staff at our school came up with a scavenger hunt for the kids to find around school, depending on grade level. (ex.: find two parallel lines, etc.) when the student found the item on their list a volunteer would stamp their form verifying the student was correct. Once the child had all of the blocks on their form stamped they went to the multipurpose room to receive a prize and a snack/drink. All of the kids and parents seemed to have a great time and many kids asked if we could do it again this year...... Just thought I would share the idea.

Love the "Family + Math" name, maybe even "Family + Math = Fun!"
Thanks for your clever ideas.

Einstein Night (any famous mathematician, do you have a teacher that specializes in teaching math in your school?)
Family + Night (with a really big plus)
Cipher night (after all Jethro Bodine coudl always cipher cause he had a 6th grade edgeeeecation)
Postives and negatives night

If your going to do anything else with this night, perhaps we could weave the two together into a creative name.

Greetings! I KNOW that there are very creative people who frequent this message board - so I've come to you! I need to plan a Family Math Night and need help. First of all - anyone have any clever/catchy names to call the evening? This event will be for K-5 students and families. We'll have grade appropriate break out sessions for families to participate in hands-on activities, that should be the easy part. But I need a clever title and something fun to do at the end when everyone comes back together. Any ideas for a math based performance or activity that all ages could enjoy? It's always good to send them home feeling like they had fun! Thanks.

In years past we had a BINGO math night per each grade, with free pizza, salad, juice and water. Everyone got to play a game of BINGO, but the winner would then have to answer a grade appropriate math question to claim their prize. Even had the adults answer a 4th grade question in order to win a spirit item, like a ball cap...

This year, for our higher grades, I've convince the committee to change things up. We're going to have an "Are you smarter than a 3rd or 4th grader" evening (this is an idea I posted about last December on these boards).

The idea will be to incorporate all areas of study, including math, language arts, social studies and history. For any of the math or language arts questions we're going to take them directly from their state required testing studies. The social studies and science will be questions that the kids just recently learned, so it is fresh in their minds...

Going to use the same format as the tv show, except the maximum prize will be like a $100 gift card to the mall or something like that. As the families come in any parent that is willing to play the game will put their name into a random drawing. Same for the kids where their name will go into the random drawing to be the "classmates". Still have a bit to work out, but that should give you enough on the general idea...
