how not to sled

No snow stories here in Texas, but my son crunched his had really badly in PE last week. Painful, horribly swollen, turning black and blue, unable to use it. Ridiculous me - a mere mom - thought perhaps we should visit the ER.

Son and hubby set me straight. In PE, my one of my son's friends traded positions with him so he wouldn't really need to use his hands so much in football. (So that took care of the really important issue - how to keep participating in PE.)

It was his left hand and since he's right-handed, not such a big deal as far as school. But - most critically- if we went to a doctor and it WAS broken, they have this pesky habit of applying CASTS, which make kiddo inelgible to play soccer. We can't have that!

Bottom line - suck it up, wrap it with an ace bandage if really necessary, and keep playing.

Actually, a week later, it truly is getting better. (Although the bruising got pretty horrible before it started healing.) Had I not seen improvement, soccer or no soccer, we would have been visiting the doctor!

Yes I do. I love the warm weather but this state just isnt worth it.

I miss the 4 seasons and actually being able to see them

Poor Shawn. Don't you miss the unpredictable winters in this part of the country?

My husband's cousin used to go skiing in Indiana. He brought his ski equipment down here one time when we had a snow. Rednecks on skis, very funny- until one of them skied into the woods and didn't know how to stop. More hurt pride than anything. No alcohol was involved either!

The big thing around here was tying the sled to an ATV. Very dangerous. My kids did that with their grandpa without my knowledge. I was not a happy mom. Another thing that used to be popular and I've only heard of this. Car hoods. Yep, real hoods off of cars. They say they go fast.

Plastic sleds on a sheet of ice that looked like snow. Did I mention the large barn at the bottom that my sled hit? Yeah I still have the scar on my forehead!

OH!! Barbwire fences are evil also! Ran into one of those when I pulled the wrong lever to turn the sled. No broken bones but lots of brusies! I looked part Smuf!

I think I will stick with snowmoblies!!

Dont grease up (beeswax, used for archery bows, actually) those plastic saucers on a 40ft hill with a steep grade and a tree hidden in 4ft of snow at the bottom.
'Cuz it hurts. Our Scout Troop had 8 kids with broken bones that day.

No snow here, just killer surf, its been awesome and no hidden trees under the waves. Maybe a few sharks, though. :D

I just saw this. I am still hoping for a really good snow this year. Just like old times.

My friend in WV had to take her little girl to the ER about the time of the original post. She was sledding toward a tree and instead of baling she stuck her leg up to stop herself. I think the cast comes off this week. Who know sledding could be so dangerous. LOL! Of course I would have three kinds of heartattacks if my kids did some of the stuff I did on sleds.
