Question: BoxTops for Education wrote checks payable to our PTO but we were inactive Can we use the $ elsewhre

3 years ago all officers resigned our PTO and there were no meetings, no minutes etc. but BoxTops for Education continued to be collected at our school and General Mills wrote the checks payable to our PTO. Can we just have former president cash those checks and use that $ wherever we want to in our school without it passing through the PTO bank account?

The first thing you should do is contact Box Tops for Education and ask them to write any new checks to the school. They might also reissue the checks written to the PTO. I'm not sure of the legalities, since their are no PTO officers, but another option might be to sign those checks over to the school. I wouldn't recommend cashing them first, though. That seems like it could create problems despite your good intentions.
