Question: PTO is donating to a family in need. Is that legal?

I am a single mom that lives in Indiana and am involved in the PTO. I went to a meeting and learned that the "board" is allowing the president to donate $900 of their funds to a family in need. The father has cancer and is in hospice. I think they need money, but I also thought the money was supposed to go back to the school. Is this legal??

If the pto is a nonprofit with no standing rules in place stating the parameters under which the money may be given to families in need, then the answer is yes- it is illegal.
