sharondea-- Not sure why you have co chairs for a Treasurer. The Treasurer is an elected position while chairpersons or co-chairpersons are usually appointed positions by the Exec Board. Not sure how your school is set up, but I've never heard of a Tresurer having a committee!
Either way, bylaws should not be changed to suit a temporary need. It defeats the purpose. Has our US Constitution been updated year after year when new issues arise--no. It holds true and it takes quite a bit to enact a new national policy or law to further define it. But the basis of our country remains the same. Bylaws should stand for an extensive period of time with only minor changes done occasionally. If you are a 501C3 school, you need to refile your bylaws with the Fed Gov't since you were granted tax exempt status based upon the bylaws submitted with your application. Changing them to suit someone that wants to do something different isn't the solution. The case for this conversation was based upon a quick change of the bylaws that would affect the election of a PTO. A change that was not done with the membership's knowledge or vote.
Also, did anyone consider passing a rule to make an exception for the one parent who was unavailable to make the meeting instead of inconveniencing many others instead?
Altering bylaws (especially on short notice and without membership input/disclosure) is a little extreme. That is actually the kind of action that would get us in trouble with the state regarding our status as a membership organization (corporation).

It is sort of customary to leave out a lot of information when posting to a public board. It is not a court of law, and if you don't leave things out, you might get answers to things you were not asking. It also helps shield the RL people involved a bit. Obviously, this one revealed a little too much and then you have taken it to a whole new level of TMI.

proud mom did your general membership vote on the bylaws? If not then that sounds like trying to line things up to go your way? There are ways things are suppose to be done and I am not convince that your group is following those procedures.
We actually are going to be updating ours with a commitee, that committee will make recommendations and then ask the membership for a vote, if that membership doesn't agree we go back to the drawing board. just a thought!
