@blippincot - I sent a letter to our local Huntington Learning Center - heard back about 2 days later via email. I had the certificates the next day. As for the car dealers, I sent the same generic, short letter with the basics - small bit about the school, small bit about the auction and our goal, 501c number and a thanks for consideration. I personalized one to a Porsche, Mercedes, Land Rover dealer located across from the school and they were the only ones who did not respond with something! Go figure!

We just hosted our event on Friday night, and I wanted to thank all of you for your inspiration on places to look for donations. Our Silent Auction alone brought in just shy of $10,000. All free donations! We do not charge an entry fee and we do not charge for any activities. Our night is a fun family event that is free to the school. Our expenses for the night may have been $100. Everything is run through donations and volunteers.

We are in NJ and we also received the Bradford Renaissance Portraits package without asking it just arrived - My committee said they tried to do many searches on them and they are legit. They just opened in NY so they want to generate business with fundraising. These types of packages don't make much for us but we will have a basket and see what happens.

Good Luck to you!

Bradford Renaissance Portraits is legit. Personally I think they overvalue their items (a portrait, with a single print is NOT worth $5,000) but it's legit. Obviously their goal is to have the winning bidder enjoy, get their print and then need to buy more prints (for grandparents, cousins, etc).

Also worth mentioning that they don't include framing, which can be quite expensive. All that said, it's a viable option, and they've got a place in almost all the events I run.
