Question: Transferring money from PTA to PTO

Our school is in the process of switching from PTA to PTO. I understand that we should to spend any remaining PTA money prior to disbanding. We currently are doing a PTA fundraiser. I'd like to use the income from the fundraiser to help start up our PTO (insurance, IRS nonprofit application fees). Is it legal to do this?

I've heard that the national/state PTA sometimes wants a piece of your extra funds, so you're much better off spending it all down on approved purposes (stuff for the school), and then starting the PTO off with its own money. You should probably look at any membership agreements you have with the PTA.
