Does the school (ie principal) have a right to deny our request to obtain a non profit status and make us go through the Associate Student Body (ASB)?

Are you a PTO or other type of independent group? Assuming so (and I admit I am not familiar with the ASB), you are free to pursue 501(c)(3)/nonprofit status without the principal's blessing. It does sound like there's a communication issue, though. Do you know why he or she is against your group seeking nonprofit status?
