No you are not wrong. Yes it is all about the kids. My question is, why did your treasurer or VP care who went on this fun lunch ride? The larger number of children who qualified to go, means lots of sales. If that makes sense or not? :-)

We have this problem all the time and I know what you are going through. The frustration you feel because someone else isn't thinking of the children or child who WILL get their feeling hurt!! Especially when they did all that work and to be told, they didn't get it in on "time" for what ever reason, is cruel!!

We do lots of fundraiser and our School committee will not allow any type of insentive. I mean any type, we just tried out a new catalog fundraiser and the sales rep said if we raised "X" amount of dollars he would have a party for the entire school. We went to the school committee and they turn him down.
Maybe you should think about not doing any insentives. Just a thought, good luck.

Of course you did the right thing. Kudos to you too for reminding her that she is also not the person in charge of the decision making. Most of us are not by nature confronational people but when you are the head of an organization you need to stick up for what is right. What you did was in the best interest of those kids. You can stand by your decision. Can she say the same thing?

You did the right thing Cottonwood. Those five kids deserve the limo ride/lunch for fulfilling the requirements set out for them. Good for them!

Your VP overstepped her bounds by making a statement on behalf of the PTO. When some people head out on their power trip, they lose sight of what's really important.

OK, let me preface this by saying I'm a shy, anti-confrontational type of guy. I'm pretty much laid back, and don't let things bother me. Then this happens...
Our spring fundraiser is finishing up, a catalog-style fundraiser. We had the kids return their money, etc. on Monday, April 9th. A big draw for this time around was that any student who sold 20 items, was getting a pizza lunch at chuck e. cheese, via a Hummer limo. Needless to say, the kids are going ballistic over this.
So, come yesterday, we started counting money and stuff. After I'd left for the day, (i'm the president, by the way) treasurer made a comment to the V.P. that any kid turning in their fundraiser stuff Tues., Wed., or Thur. would not be eligible to go on the limo ride to Mr. Cheese's.
My v.p. didn't say anything, but went along with what the treasurer was saying. So now this morning, I find out what was said. And I literally went up the wall.
First off, it's stated in black and white on the fundraiser letter that accompanies the catalog, that "Every student that sells 20 items" gets to go. Second, nobody said that Monday was our ultimate deadline, in fact, we're accepting orders up thru Thursday. This is not a contest to see whole sells the most, so why does it matter when they turn their stuff in. Besides, Sunday was Easter, and we had numerous students absent yesterday because of that. Lastly, we're not paying for these kids to go, so why should I care who gets to go.
I confronted her about it, and she got disgusted that I am going against what she's said. I reminded her that the v.p. is chairperson, so it wasn't even up to her to make that decision.
For the record, only 5 more students (today) earned the trip. I told her, if she wants to call up the kids and their parents (and other people who bought stuff) and tell them, "Thanks for supporting the school, but because you didn't get it in Monday you can't go" then go right ahead. I told her she'd probably lose out on the hundred(s) of dollars in sales, and create some irate parents. She reluctantly backed down, but made it seem like i was forcing her to.

So.... was I wrong? I'm just looking for some reassurance. I'd love it for every student to go on that trip. I just can't get over why she'd like to shatter a kid's 'dream' like that... it's all about the kids, right?
