I stumbled across this message board last week while drafting a donation letter for a silent auction and have read through hundreds of pages of this thread!
I am sending my letters out this week, but have applied to some national companies and a couple nearby while organizing. I have already heard from:
Green Mountain Coffee (6 bags of Organic Fair Trade Coffee) They responded within one day and have already shipped!
Stampin' Up -- Sending us more than $300 worth of donations! I never would have thought of asking them without this forum! I am so encouraged already!
A friend of mine is donating full-size products from Sephora that she was given!
Our local college is giving us tickets and getting a basketball signed!
This is a wonderful site with very helpful members! I look forward to joining in the conversation more often as we hear from different donors.

You just have to keep at it. It often takes years to create a list for your cause that will produce results. Some years are better than others, I've found. I've often found that asking for donations from more local or regional area organizations/companies/theaters/museums produces better results than the corporate donations.

That all depends on a few things. Are you purchasing the iPad, or is it donated? If you are purchasing it, what is the cost? Has your school done similar raffles where you can project your sales? If so, what was the price of the tickets each and how much was made? How many tickets can you guarantee will be sold? What is your goal; How much do you want to gross/net?
Take all of these things into account and project how much you will make with your guaranteed sales minus cost. If it is not enough and if your parents will pay it, charge a higher amount per ticket to make your projected profit.
