I agree we need to do our homework to create our own lists. Reading through the entire thread not only provides leads for donations, we can also pick up a lot of tips for our fundraisers.

Build a Bear site says no PTAs, PTOs etc
LL Bean site say no donations to schools etc.

We use Paypal. It is quick and easy at check-out, and the percentage fee is so much worth the confidence in payment. Having to chase down bounced checks is a nightmare. Plus, hardly anyone carries their checkbook anymore. You can add a "convenience fee" to your total if you want to offset the percentage that Paypal charges. We chose to absorb the fees.

Six months out for major corporate sources, about three months out for local sources. :)
