Question: tax exempt

my elementary school has a tax exempt # but they are saying that the PTO has to get their own. Anything that the PTO buys is for school use, are we not entitled to use the tax exempt #.

I'm assuming that you're talking about a tax ID number issued by the state that exempts you from state sales tax. Because your group is independent from the school, you can't use the school's ID. You could get around this issue by donating the money to the school, then having the school make the purchase. However, in most states it's a fairly simply issue to apply for a sales tax exemption. Chances are you can download the form online from your state tax agency.
