Question: How much is the principal involved

How much is a principal involved in the "running" of a PTO when it is not school controlled? Should that principal have access to the bank statements and record keeping and have a key to the locked file drawers of the PTO? Thank you.

You know that old cliche, you can catch more flies with honey than vinegar? The thing to focus on is having a good working relationship with the principal because a principal can make your life very difficult if the relationship is strictly adversarial. It's typical to give the principal financial updates. As far as that key goes, if you are keeping your paperwork at the school, it probably makes sense to keep a key at the office in case your key is lost or if someone needs access to the file cabinet.

Here's a great article on working with the principal that you might find helpful. Good luck!
