Thanks all for the many helpful suggestions. I, too, find car rides a good time to talk - not to mention having a captive audience helps also.

We actually had a funny episode along this line when he was in 5th grade. A sub caught some boys trying to visit adult sites during computer time. (Bright idea - all the computers line the walls facing OUT, with a teacher monitoring access.) My son wasn't one of the key parties, but I imagine he was aware - I think ALL the boys in the room were.

When I spoke to the principal (a friend), she told me what had happened and that she was pretty sure the kids didn't see anything because of the filter, but she'd called the tech department to check. (And she had called the boys into her office and talked about appropriate computer activity.)

I helped her pull the browser history on the machine and we saw the addresses the boy had tried. (And the filter did block adult material, so no one saw anything inappropriate.) But it was a really odd pattern. They tried a couple adult sites, then a site on sport fishing, then adult sites, then back to the fishing site. Fishing?? Why in the world were they going there in the middle of this exploration? But looking at the address, we figured it out.

They were typing something like www.striper.com . Turns out a "Striper" (one "P") is a type of bass. Must have been quite a disappointment after all the blocks to hit a site that didn't get stopped by the filter only to see pictures of fish instead of strippers!

The principal and I laughed our heads off, and I teased her that what really need attention was not the 5th grade porn problem, but the 5th grade spelling problem!

Note to self.... clean up computer before inviting LUV to dinner. Ask her to bring dessert. :D

So, once it's 'off the chart' the numbers don't count, right? Kinda like a painting being priceless? So you might as well go ahead and eat it without worrying!

CC, too funny! I also like to annoy my children sometimes. I think it's only fair.

You know one time I was at the in-laws and my mil asked me to fix her computer. I figured it was due for a little cleanup, so I began deleting the internet cookies, history and such. Imagine my shock when I found some very interesting sites listed. Imagine my mil's shock when she came up behind me to watch how to do the cleanup and saw the files. Seems my nephews and one brother in law had been using her computer and someone was going to some interesting places. At first she didn't say much, I quietly suggested that she put some controls on the system. She thought that was a good idea.

Oh yeah, I made the strawberry cake last night. The cake part is a winner, but the frosting was
(1) a bit complicated and didn't turn out thick enough
(2) uses a POUND of butter and 4 egg yolks so I figure it's off the fat and cholesterol charts by about a million miles.
I'll be using the standard butter cream recipe I have from now on for that cake or even just some whipped cream.

Hey Rocky, watch me pull a rabbit out of my hat.

Lord, I Hope This Day is Good
~ Don Williams

Lord, I hope this day is good
I'm feelin empty and misunderstood
I should be thankful, Lord, I know I should
But Lord I hope this day is good

Lord, have you forgotten me?
I been prayin to you faithfully
I should be thankful Lord you know I am
But Lord I hope you understand

I don't need fortune and I don't need fame
Send down the thunder, Lord, send down the rain
But when you're plannin just how it will be
Plan a good day for me

Lord, I hope this day is good
I'm feelin empty and misunderstood
I should be thankful, Lord, I know I should
But Lord I hope this day is good

You've been the king since the dawn of time
All that I'm askin is a little less crime
It might be hard for the devil to do
But it would be easy for you

Lord, I hope this day is good
I'm feelin empty and misunderstood
I should be thankful, Lord, I know I should
But Lord I hope this day is good

Or leave the webpage on Hugh Hefners site when he gets home from school-- that'll really freak 'em out.

We have the parental controls on our kids computers, but I agree just installing the controls (that none are failsafe) wont just make it go away -- my brothers, sister and mom relationship was pretty good so we knew the bird and bees stuff was OK to discuss (too a point ) with her, Dad not so much but he was OK with the question/ subject.

Don Williams -- hehe -- mine hate loud Led Zepplin or David Ball (witht the twang) 'especially 'Thinking Problem'
