Lu, I hope they find the guy and get your van fixed.

CC, I had the honor of hearing McCain speak in person a few years back and I've loved him ever since. My husband calls him the one of the few men in politics you can honor. He loves that McCain can make the world's problems all seem managable, not by stepping on countries but by firmly guiding them. Considering all he's been through (you should read his book) I don't know how he isn't filled with anger (to go along with his pain) everyday.

My son's party was a huge hit. Even the girls seemed to have a good time. My 3 year old has a crush and got all the girls to play in his new kitchen with him. For once I'm glad my husband like electronics so much, we had at least 2 game systems going at once and after lunch, we all gathered in the family room (with surround sound) to watch Cars. One of the parents suggested I offer childcare on inservice days. That is definately not on my to do list, but I do think we might start having out of school parties with a few kids over.

The irony of commitment is that it’s deeply liberating-in work, in play, in love. The act frees you from the tyranny of your internal critic, from the fear that likes to dress itself up and parade around as rational hesitation. To commit is to remove your head as the barrier to your life. --Anne Morris

“The soldier, above all other people, prays for peace, for he must suffer and bear the deepest wounds and scars of war.” –Douglas MacArthur

“It is the soldier, not the reporter,
Who has given us freedom of the press.

“It is the soldier, not the poet,
Who has given us freedom of speech.

“It is the soldier, not the campus organizer,
Who has given us the freedom to demonstrate.

“It is the soldier, who salutes the flag,
Who serves beneath the flag,
And whose coffin is draped by the flag,
Who allows the protester to burn the flag.”

The Manchurian Candidate for '08

It is easy to take liberty for granted, when you have never had it taken from you. ~Dick Cheney

I think there is one higher office than president and I would call that patriot. ~Gary Hart

As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them. ~John Fitzgerald Kennedy

In the beginning of a change, the patriot is a scarce man, and brave, and hated and scorned. When his cause succeeds, the timid join him, for then it costs nothing to be a patriot. ~Mark Twain, Notebook, 1935

“War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things: the decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks nothing is worth a war, is worse.” –John Stuart Mill

CC--wow--that was amazing...thanks for posting such a lovely piece. I had the occassion to speak at the school today--we do a spirit award for the kids--and I asked all the current military and the vets to raise their hands. I then asked the children to turn around and look at the heros in the audience.
We live near Quantico so the day for all of us is a shared event. I feel that I personally have had the honor of putting on a uniform every day and serving at the pleasure of wonderful Americans like yourself. Thank you for your love of our children and our freedom...it is what calls our Nation to greater deeds on a routine basis...
